The ninth stage of the Tour of Portugal 2024 was won by Abner Gonzalez (Efapel Cycling), who was the strongest of the breakaway, after riding 170.8 kilometers between Maia and Mondim de Basto.

The 23-year-old Puerto Rican rider, who achieved his first victory of the season, overtook Russian Artem Nych (Sabgal / Anicolor) and Spaniard David Delgado (Burgos – BH), who came in 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

It was a hot day, with a busy start and countless breakaway attempts, but finally a breakaway of 29 riders was formed, including many important names in the fight for the general classification.

They soon reached the intermediate sprint in Paredes, where the first man through was… exactly, German Tivani, the leader of the points classification, who would also be the first on the penultimate climb of this edition of the Grandissima held in Amarante.

The Tour of Portugal 2024 has entered the weekend of all decisions and that’s exactly what happened today on the mythical Senhora da Graça climb. The race was turned upside down. The breakaway stormed the stage with Aber Gonzalez taking the win, Artem Nych took the yellow jersey while the leader, Afonso Eulálio, attacked very hard on the penultimate climb and didn’t hold on in the end.

In the general classification, Portuguese Afonso Eulálio (ABTF Betão – Feirense) ceded the lead to Russian Artem Nych (Sabgal / Anicolor) with one stage to go. Colombian Diego Camargo (Forte Petrolike-Androni Giocattoli) lost 5 positions and is now 9th.

The Portuguese race will finish this Sunday with the tenth part, an individual time trial of 26.6 kilometers around Viseu on undulating terrain.

The best Colombian of the day was Diego Camargo (Forte Petrolike-Androni Giocattoli), closing the top 20. The boyacense beetle was reported more than 4 minutes behind the winner.

As for the rest of the Colombians of Forte Petrolike-Androni Giocattoli, Edison Alejandro arrived in 50th position, while Cristian David Rico and Ómar Mendoza came in further behind, with a delay of more than 25 minutes.
