SAN JOSE. Costa Rican cyclist Daniel Bonilla won on Wednesday the 55th edition of the Vuelta a Costa Rica, while the podium was completed by the Mexican Efrén Santos, 51 seconds away, and the Honduran Luis López, 1:49 minutes away.

Bonilla was crowned champion without winning a single stage, but showing off on the mountain and in the time scale, where with his team he managed to put on the yellow shirt and withstand the attacks of the rivals.

‘Very happy because God gives me the privilege of being champion. It was a great team work that is one of our characteristics, the group union, we are a family, ‘said Bonilla.

The Costa Rican cyclist, who last year was runner-up, dedicated his first Vuelta title to ‘all the people’ who ‘supported him’.

Of the 55 editions of the Vuelta, 27 Costa Rican cycling champions were crowned in 20 Colombians, while the Mexicans won 3, the Guatemalans 3, a Venezuelan and an American.

The last stage, which consisted of a circuit of 100 kilometers in the province of Heredia (center), was won on Wednesday by Chilean Pablo Alarcón, of the Mexican team Canel’s Specialized with a time of 2 hours, 35 minutes, 2 seconds followed by the Russian Viktor Manakov and the Costa Rican Pablo Mudarra at 3:37

The Peruvian Alaín Quispe was the champion of the flying goals, the Ecuadorian Pablo Caicedo the one of the mountain prizes and the Honduran Luis Lopez was the Sub 23 champion.

‘It’s a tremendous emotion, very happy to have finished the lap well. We came to play a good role and I think the team achieved that goal, ‘said Peru’s Quispe.
