Double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel suffered an accident this morning while training in Oetingen, in the Flanders region, when he crashed into a van, fracturing his collarbone, a rib and his right hand.

According to various Belgian media reports, the Soudal Quick-Step rider hit the door of a postal company vehicle and his bike frame was broken in two.

Little by little they know all the real details of the accident, some reports suggest that the driver of the van may have opened the door suddenly, without giving Evenepoel time to avoid it.

After the crash the Belgian cyclist was conscious and was seen sitting up while being attended to by the medical services before being transferred to the Herentals hospital, where he underwent the respective examinations.

As reported by Het Laatste Nieuws the Belgian rider fractured his collarbone, a rib and his right hand, but the cyclist will be examined further. It is expected that there will be more clarity as to whether surgery is necessary or not.

Evenepoel’s winter training plan will have to be replaced by rest, relaxation and recovery. “December will be a long month, because I will be able to do almost nothing. I can’t put weight on my shoulder. I won’t be able to cycle either,” Evenepoel explained in an interview with VTM Nieuws.
