Egan Bernal is living a new stage in his career after recovering from the road accident he suffered two years ago in Colombia. Despite the seriousness of the event, he has had a triumphant return that is justified, for example, with the podium he recently achieved in the Tour of Cataluña.
The zipaquireño has the Tour of Spain as his big goal for this season, even INEOS Grenadiers plans for him to be its leader to conquer the only big one he is missing after being crowned champion of the Tour de France in 2019 and two years later in the Giro d’Italia.
The third place obtained in the Tour of Cataluña and in O Gran Camiño are two precedents that put Egan within the list of favorites to win the Iberian round. In fact, there are those who consider that he has great possibilities of becoming champion.
In this regard, the sports coach Jenaro Leguízamo, who accompanied him in his recovery process, knows that he has the credentials to finish at the top of La Vuelta from the mentality and tenacity he showed to get back on the bike.
“Cycling is very uncertain, anything can happen, but because of the evolution of his health I have no doubt that Egan will win the Vuelta a España at some point,” he said in statements reported by the newspaper El Colombiano.
What rivals would Egan have in the Tour of Spain?
Although there are still no confirmed rivals, Egan Bernal could face riders like Sepp Kuss, who is looking to defend the title he won last year, and Jonas Vingegaard in the Vuelta a España. However, the presence of the latter is an unknown due to the accident he suffered in the Vuelta al País Vasco.
On the other hand, Mikel Landa and Lenny Martínez, whom he already faced in the last Vuelta a Cataluña, as well as Joao Almeida and Adam Yates on the UAE Emirates side.
