In a finish for sprinters, Fernando Gaviria (Movistar Team) won the sprint in the first stage of the Tour Colombia 2024, after riding 155.8 kilometers between Paipa and Duitama, in a day that had a flat course.
The paisa sprinter crossed the finish line in first place overcoming in a close packing to the Italian Davide Persico (Bingoal WB) and the British Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan), who finished second and third, respectively.
The breakaway of the day was led by Mexican Ignacio de Jesús Prado (Canel’s – Java), Brazilian Lauro Cesar Chaman (Swift Carbon Pro Cycling Brasil) and Colombians Diego Ochoa (Team Saitel), Brayan Sánchez (Team Medellín-EPM), Iván Arturo Ojeda (Colombia Potencia de la Vida – Strongman, David Santiago Gómez (Team Sistecredito) and Cristian Camilo Muñoz (Nu Colombia).
A mechanical mishap left the breakaway with six riders. The winner of the first sprint of the day, Brayan Sánchez, was the victim. Faced with the unexpected, the rider from Antioquia of Team Medellin EPM decided to wait for the bunch.

He also referred to what is to come, where he will play the role of a gregario given the mountainous route that follows in the five remaining stages. “This was the flat stage, now I have to put on my overalls and work with my teammates,” concluded the paisa sprinter.
The Tour Colombia will continue this Wednesday with the second stage, an undulating 168.6-kilometer fraction starting in Paipa and finishing in Santa Rosa de Viterbo, which includes three categorized mountain prizes and three sprints.
