In another finish for sprinters, the turn to win for the second time in the race went to Jonathan Milan (Lidl – Trek), who won in a close sprint stage eleven of the Giro d’Italia 2024, after riding 207 kilometers between Foiano di Val Fortore and Francavilla al Mare.
The general classification remained unchanged in the top positions and Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) kept the lead, escorted by Colombian Dani Martinez (Bora-Hansgrohe) at 2’40 and Geraint Thomas (INEOS-Grenadiers) at 2’56.
The Italian sprinter, 23, crossed the finish line first with a time of 4:23:18″ ahead of Belgian Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step), who was relegated to the last place in the peloton to close the boyacense Juan Sebastian Molano (UAE Team Emirates), who had to settle for fifth place, while Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) came in seventh.
The breakaway of the day was led by Frenchman Thomas Champion (Cofidis), Italian Edoardo Affini (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and Dutchman Tim van Dijke (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), but in the final phase all three were neutralized.
Once the breakaway was caught, the Italian Andrea Piccolo (EF Education-EasyPost) made a move, but his attempt failed, as the speed trains did not let him distance himself. In the end everything was defined to the sprint in which Jonathan Milan (Lidl – Trek) achieved his second victory in the Italian round, the only rider so far, apart from Tadej Pogacar, who has managed to repeat victory this 2024.
This Thursday, May 16, stage 12 of the Corsa Rosa will take the riders from Martinsicuro to Fano over 193 kilometers with four fourth-category mountain passes.
