The Tour de Romandie 2024 came to an end and Carlos Rodriguez of INEOS Grenadiers took the title after defending the lead in the final stage of 150.8 kilometers around the town of Vernier.
The Spanish climber climbed to the top of the podium with Russia’s Aleksandr Vlasov and Germany’s Florian Lipowitz, both of BORA-hansgrohe. While Colombian Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) closed the top 10.
As for the rest of the Colombian riders, Iván Ramiro Sosa (Movistar Team) finished 24th, Harold Tejada (Astana Qazaqstan Team) 34th, Rigoberto Urán (EF Education – EasyPost) 41st and Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe) 82nd.
The last stage was defined in a sprint of a reduced peloton, where the Frenchman Dorian Godon (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) was the fastest after a long bunch, beating the Italian Simone Consonni (Lidl – Trek).
The final day, which started and finished in Vernier, was contested on a circuit with four laps, each with a third category pass, and then out onto a final stretch with several climbs and descents to the finish.
Before completing the first lap and after several attacks, the long breakaway of the day was created, with Remi Cavagna, Darren Rafferty, Marco Brenner and Alexandre Balmer. The group was more than two minutes ahead of the parsimonious bunch.
On the third and penultimate lap, Cavagna accelerated again and pulled several meters ahead of his fellow adventurers, who started the chase and soon caught him. Before completing the last lap, the peloton pressed the pace and decided to end the breakaway, achieving it with 28 kilometers to go.
Leaving the circuit the attacks were not few, including that of Juan Ayuso, but with 3500 meters to go, much of the peloton was riding compact, in what would be a final to the packaging, under an increasingly heavy rain.
The waterlogged road and several final curves were the challenges of the final mass bunch, in which the speed trains did not finish forming, and everything was defined with a battle in which Dorian Godon won, taking his second stage in the race, beating Simone Consonni and Dion Smith, who completed the podium of the day.
