In a demanding finish, Cormac McGeough (Canel’s – Java) won the fourth stage of the Tour of Guatemala 2024. Monday’s route comprised a leg-breaker from Mazatenango to Coatepeque, with 125 kilometers of route, which included two categorized mountain prizes.
The 28-year-old Irishman attacked his breakaway companions with less than 2,000 meters to the finish, beating Colombian Jhonatan Chaves (Nu Colombia) and Costa Rican Donovan Ramírez (Colono Bikestation Kölbi), who finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
As for the general classification, there were no changes and David González (Team Medellín-EPM) remained in command, escorted by Róbinson López (GW Erco Shimano). The podium was completed by Guatemalan Mardoqueo Vásquez (Hino-One-La Red-Suzuki).
During the day three flying goals were disputed where Johan Colón (Orgullo Paisa) was one of the protagonists, adding several points. Colombian Jhonatan Chaves (Nu Colombia) stood out in the mountains.
The breakaway of the day was led by Heiner Parra (Canel’s – Java), Jhonatan Chaves (Nu Colombia), Elí Saúl Burgos (Red Hook), Alder Torres (Municipalidad de Fraijanes), Edgar Torres (Hino-One-La red-Suzuki), Cormac McGeough (Canel’s – Java), Javier Jamaica (Team Medellín-EPM), Nicolás Paredes (Hino-One-La red-Suzuki), Daniel Muñoz (Nu Colombia) and Esdras Morales (Eca Electricidad), but the peloton neutralized them past the halfway point.
In the closing, the Colombian Jhonatan Chaves (Nu Colombia), the Irishman Cormac McGeough (Canel’s – Java) and the Costa Rican Donovan Ramirez (Colono Bikestation Kölbi) and Mateo Sanchez (Orgullo Paisa) escaped, but the rider from Antioquia stayed in the final part.
This Tuesday will be disputed the fifth stage of the Guatemalan round, with departure in Ocos and end in Totonicapán, on a route of 125 kilometers, which includes six mountain prizes and a high finish.
