Venezuelan José Castillo was crowned individual champion of the 45th version of the Vuelta Ciclística Independencia Nacional, whose final stage was run on Sunday with a closed circuit in the Expreso Quinto Centenario in the National District.

Castillo, member of the team champion Venezuela País de Futuro, arrived with the peloton 42 seconds behind the leaders of the seventh stage. He closed with an overall time of 19 hours, 18 minutes and 49 seconds. Five seconds ahead of Colombian Marlon Garzón (Iowa Latino) and 11 seconds behind his compatriot and 2023 champion, Luis Mora (Inteja-Imca).

Frenchman Mathieu Pellegrin, from the CSCA Saci team, won Sunday’s circuit in a sprint between four cyclists with a time of 02:31:50. In this sprint also arrived in order of classification: Thomas Trepizur (Team JCO San Martín), Angelvis Arroyo (Venezuela País de Futuro) and Alberto Ramos (Verrazano Cycling).

The final stage of the Vuelta Independencia was staged this Sunday with a closed circuit on the Expreso Quinto Centenario in the National District.

Sunday’s race of the Vuelta Independencia was characterized by breakaway attempts from very early on, which did not allow Venezuela País Futuro to control the protection of the overall leader.

In the late stages, the South Americans were able to place one rider in the breakaway (Arroyo). Castillo was in rhythm with the competition all the way and his overall lead was not threatened by his closest pursuers.

Castillo, second in the overall classification of the Vuelta Independencia 2023, was able to complete the work he started a year ago. “Last year I was satisfied, but with a certain bad taste because I knew I could have won. I did a complete preparation this time and I came for everything”, expressed the rider who took the lead by winning the fourth stage in the mountain of Rancho Arriba, Ocoa.

The competition, organized by the Dominican Cycling Federation, was dedicated to President Luis Abinader with Wellington Arnaud, director of INAPA, as president of the Organizing Committee. It was also sponsored by Banco de Reservas, Miderec, Ege Haina, Ministry of Public Works, Omsa, National Health Service, INAPA, and the Dominican Municipal League.
