In a thrilling finish, Spaniard Juan Pedro Lopez (Lidl Trek) secured overall victory in the Tour of the Alps 2024. The final 120-kilometer stage was won by Aurélien Paret-Peintre, who dominated in the reduced bunch sprint with Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain – Victorious) in second and Valentin Paret-Peintre (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) third.
The places of honor were completed by Frenchman Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) and Italian Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain – Victorious), who took second and third place in the final classification. The best Colombian was Iván Ramiro Sosa (Movistar Team) in the top 10.
The fifth and last stage of the race, which served as preparation for the Giro d’Italia, was run around the Italian town of Lovico Terme. The first 50 kilometers of the route were flat, but after that the peloton had to climb the Palù del Fersina twice (12.5 kilometers at 6.1%).
The short day was animated by INEOS Grenadiers from the early stages, launching Norwegian Tobias Foss and British rider Geraint Thomas, who tried to attack, but both were controlled by the group of favorites.
Thomas rode ahead of the peloton for a few kilometers, along with Hugh Carthy (EF Education EasyPost) and Giulio Pellizzari (VF Group Bardiani-CSF Faizanè), but the trio was caught before the start of the final climb.
On the final climb, it was the Bahrain-Victorious men who tried to make it difficult for leader Juan Pedro Lopez (Lidl Trek). First it was Antonio Tiberi who went on the attack, but the Italian was neutralized.
Then it was the turn of Wout Poels to move, who ventured out on his own. The Dutchman took a slight lead, but in the reduced peloton, with Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale in command, he was neutralized.
While Lopez chatted with all his competitors, the final phase came with some attacks in the last kilometer, but in the end it all came down to the sprint in the streets of Levico Terme, where Aurélien Paret-Peintre sprinted convincingly to take the win.
