BARTICA. Guyana was the host of the 2019 Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships held on August 10 and 11 where the best young riders of the region contested a time trial and road race. Guyana Cycling Federation President Horace Burrows and his team or organizers brought the event to the town on the Essequibo River with a challenging 8.6 kilometer circuit for both events.
In the Pre-Junior category (15-16) time trial, Alexander Miller of Bermuda took the title by more than a minute ahead of Derex Segarra of Puerto Rico and fellow Bermudian Liam Flannery a further 15 seconds back in third. Enrique Comarmond of Trinidad and Tobago stormed home in 27 minutes to take the Junior (17-18) title, besting Nicholas Narraway of Bermuda who was followed by Rine Gayral of Antigua and Barbuda.
In the road race the following day Segarra and Miller switched places, with the Puerto Rican outsprinting the Bermudian and Michael Dizon-Bumann of US Virgin Islands rounding out the podium in third place. The Junior race was another golden result for Camarmond of Tinidad and Tobago, as he dominated the event. Kianny Noel of St. Martin finished second and Narraway of Bermuda came in solo to take the bronze medal.
The participating countries expressed their thanks to Burrows, the Guyana Cycling Federation, the Mayor and town of Bartica, and all the volunteers and sponsors who contributed to the success of the event. (Peter Dunne)
