After a vibrant battle, Lotte Kopecky won in spectacular fashion in the women’s road race of the World Cycling Championships, held in Zurich (Switzerland) until Sunday, thus revalidating her title from last year.
The Belgian, who won her second rainbow jersey after the one she won last year, was the fastest of the leading group in the 154.1 kilometers of the course. The Team SD Worx – Protime rider won the sprint ahead of American Chloe Dygert, who took silver, and Italian Elisa Longo Borghini, who took bronze.
The first breakaway of the day was formed by Swiss Caroline Baur, Spanish Sara Martin and Dutch Nina Berton, however, the trio’s adventure was short-lived. Then, Slovenian Urška Žigart, Luxembourger Christine Majerus, Italian Soraya Paladin, New Zealander Niamh Fisher-Black, Belgian Justine Ghekiere, Swiss Elena Hartman, Dutch Riejanne Markus and Australian Sarah Gigante tried, but their move was quickly countered by the peloton.
With 40 kilometers to go, Belgian Justine Ghekiere, Australian Ruby Roseman-Gannon and Dutch riders Riejanne Markus and Marianne Vos went on the attack. The final phase passed with a vibrant battle between the quartet and the group of favorites.
In the closing, six riders remained in the lead, who played for the victory where the great favorite, the Belgian Lotte Kopecky was the fastest, becoming two-time world champion.
As for the Colombian riders, Paula Patiño was the best of the national riders entering in 34th place, more than 10 minutes behind the winner. Juliana Londoño, Diana Peñuela and Estefania Herrera did not finish the race.
