In a very tight finish, Pavel Bittner (dsm-firmenich PostNL) won the fifth stage of the Vuelta a España 2024, after a day of 170 kilometers, which ended in a bunch sprint in Seville.

The young Czech rider was surprisingly the fastest in the bunch, just ahead of Belgian Wout van Aert (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and Australian Kaden Groves (Alpecin – Deceuninck), second and third respectively.

Six Colombians entered the peloton with the same time as the winner, except for Rigoberto Urán (EF Education EasyPost), who arrived behind. The best of the Colombians was Harold Tejada (Astana Qazaqstan) in 61st place.

The breakaway of the day was led by Spaniards Txomin Juaristi (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Ibon Ruiz (Equipo Kern Pharma), but in the end both were neutralized by the peloton.

As for the general classification, Slovenian Primož Roglič (Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe) remains at the front, escorted by Portuguese João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) at 8″ and Spanish Enric Mas (Movistar Team) at 32″. Einer Rubio (Movistar Team) is still the best Colombian in 24th place at 1:57.

The Spanish round will continue this Thursday with the dispute of the sixth stage, a mountainous day of 185.5 kilometers starting in Jerez de la Frontera and ending in Yunquera, a third category climb (8.9 km at 3.9%).
