At the beginning of December, Remco Evenepoel suffered a bad accident while training. The Belgian set off all the alarm bells after crashing into the open door of a postal truck. The injuries sustained in the crash have left the Soudal Quick-Step star out for several months.

Recently, Evenepoel has spoken about his recovery. The double Olympic champion has definitively confirmed his absence from the Giro d’Italia 2025. He has also revealed the race in which he hopes to compete again.

“I can only accept it as it is. It will be a special year, but I have to look ahead and adapt to the circumstances,” said Remco

He will most likely spend a month on the rollers, then restart his preparation for the 2025 season. It will likely include two months of training before starting his season in the Ardennes classics: “The idea is to resume at the Brabantse Pijl and then ride the mid-mountain classics to win.” He’s referring to the Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

It hasn’t been a brilliant year injury-wise for the Belgian, who had already suffered a broken collarbone and shoulder blade in the massive crash at the Itzulia this year.

“It’s slowly getting better; every day I notice small improvements. Sometimes, I still feel some pain in the shoulder. That means the injury is still healing and it’s serious after all. At home, I wear less and less slings to support the arm.

“When I go out on the street, I still wear it to avoid any wrong movements or contact,” he detailed and told that on January 9 he will undergo an important checkup of his health condition that may prove key to start training again.

“I hope to have the green light to start riding on the rollers, combined with strength sessions with the physio. That will also be necessary to get into a rhythm for the Tour.”
