Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion, Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz (the EF Education – EasyPost) appears among the riders entered for the Grand Prix Miguel Induráin 2024, which will be held before taking the start of the Itzulia Basque Country (April 1-6).
Named after the Spanish cycling legend, this hilly one-day race will find a Juan Ayuso and the Ecuadorian himself as two of the big favorites, as they have proven to have more than enough ability to reign in one-day races.
After a very promising start to the season, the ‘Locomotora’ of Carchi is already thinking about his next races, as his main goal for the year is the Tour de France, for which the club’s management has prepared a very specific calendar.
This 2024 began for the Carchi native with the national title in the individual time trial and national runner-up in the road race, in which he narrowly lost to his friend Jhonatan Narváez. He then went to the Tour Colombia, where he was the protagonist by winning the queen stage, finishing second in the general classification and being champion of the points and the mountains.
Then the Ecuadorian took a plane and traveled to Europe, where he has been preparing for his upcoming races, as he assumed the leadership of the EF Education – EasyPost team, to arrive at the best possible level for the Tour de France.
Carapaz also plans to do a high altitude camp in May, which has yet to define the exact dates and place. The Ecuadorian rider could train in the country, as he has done in other years, but it will depend on the team if it wants to leave him in Europe.
A week after the Tour de France the road race of the Olympic Games will be held. The Ecuadorian Cycling Federation has not yet defined which cyclist will be chosen for that event, since the country has only one quota.
In any case, Carapaz has made very clear his intention to race in Paris, since, in addition, he will be in France and with competition rhythm, after having raced in the Tour.
