Ecuadorian cyclist Richard Carapaz officially announced his participation in the Giro d’Italia 2025, a challenge that will mark his season. Such pronouncement was made at a press conference in Quito, on January 17, 2025.

The ‘Locomotora del Carchi’ detailed his plans for the year, highlighting that, before focusing on the ‘Corsa Rosa’, he will participate in other World Tour races and that he still does not rule out his presence in the Tour de France 2025.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion ratified that in this 2025 he will not race in the National Road Cycling Championship, to be held in Imbabura, in February. Carapaz affirmed that he will not participate because the Ecuadorian Cycling Federation (FEC) delivered the route late.

From the FEC, it was confirmed that, in October 2024, president Santiago Rosero communicated via group chat with the World Tour cyclists to ratify that the national championship would be held the first week of February. “The layout was made public through the FEC’s social networks in December,” the FEC responded.

Richie’ is inspired

‘Richie’, who at 31 continues to be one of the most outstanding cyclists worldwide, will lead the EF Education-EasyPost team in the Giro d’Italia, which will start on May 9, 2025. “I’m very inspired, training hard for this big challenge we have set for ourselves this year,” said ‘Richie’.

This year’s edition of the Giro d’Italia will be one of the most demanding, with a total distance of 3,413 km, including high mountain stages and new challenges, such as the dreaded Colle delle Finestre climb.

The race will also feature 38 kilometers of gravel and 42.3 kilometers of time trial, which will give it an even more technical and tactical touch.

The Giro d’Italia

The Ecuadorian cyclist has a special relationship with the Giro d’Italia, as in 2019 he achieved his most important victory by winning the overall, consolidating himself as one of the best in the grand tours.

In addition, Carapaz has been runner-up in the 2022 edition and took third place in the 2021 Tour de France and second place in the 2020 Vuelta a España. With 23 professional victories to his credit, the rider is considered one of the favorites for this new edition.

The 2025 Giro d’Italia will be a great opportunity for Carapaz to add another title to his palmarès, while the competition heats up with names like Primoz Roglic, Mikel Landa and Adam Yates, who are also strong contenders.

Richard Carapaz’s race calendar

“I have already known a first part of my calendar, we are finalizing details, last minute I have had a small change,” Carapaz told. Richie will also race in famous races in Europe such as Strade Bianche (March 8), Tirreno-Adriatico (March 10), Volta a Catalunya (March 24), among others.
