HAVANA. On Thursday, the prominent activist and Cuban coach, Eugenio González Álvarez, died of respiratory arrest at the age of 56.
Eugenio, whom his teammates called “El Flaco”, was a tireless promoter of cycling in the Havana municipality of East Havana, since he entered the world of this sport at the beginning of 1991.
The velodrome Reinaldo Paseiro and the preparation areas of young cyclists in the territory had in Eugenio a tenacious worker, always ready to transmit his experience and knowledge to the new batches of athletes.
With the sudden physical departure of González Álvarez, Cuban cycling and that of the Cuban capital in particular, lose one of their most solid pillars.
On behalf of the Cuban Federation and the Pan American Cycling Confederation (COPACI), its president, José Manuel Peláez Rodríguez, sends the testimony of his deepest condolences to the relatives, companions and disciples of Eugenio González Álvarez. (Copaci Press)
