In an uphill finish, Thibau Nys (Lidl – Trek) took the victory in the second stage in line of the Tour de Romandie, over 171 kilometers between Fribourg and Salvan/Les Marécottes with a mountainous profile.
The young Belgian rider, who was part of the initial breakaway, was the strongest on the final climb ahead of Italian Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) and Australian Luke Plapp (Team Jayco AlUla). Colombian Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) joined the best in 14th place.
As for the general classification, it suffered important changes and the Belgian Thibau Nys (Lidl – Trek) took the lead. While the zipaquireño Egan Bernal, of great performance, got into the top 20.
The breakaway of the day was led by Thibau Nys (Lidl-Trek), Xandro Meurisse (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Roger Adrià (BORA-hansgrohe), Nikias Arndt (Bahrain Victorious), Andrea Vendrame (AG2R Decathlon La Mondiale), Seann Flynn (dsm-firmenich PostNL) and Xabier Mikel Azparren (Q36.5). The breakaway got a comfortable lead that in the end allowed them to define the stage.
The Swiss race will continue on Thursday with the fourth day, a 15.5-kilometer individual time trial starting and finishing in the Swiss commune of Oron, in the canton of Vaud.
