In a great performance, the Costa Rican Sebastián Brenes (Canel’s-Java) won the eighth stage the Tour of Guatemala 2024, winning in the sprint. The flat day was disputed in the capital of Guatemala with 121.3 kilometers of route.

The Tico rider took advantage of his top speed to beat his compatriot Pablo Luis Mudarra (Team Colono Bikestation Kölbi) and the Panamanian Cristofer Jurado (Panama es Cultura y Valores), who finished second and third, respectively. The best Colombian was Alejandro Osorio (GW Erco Shimano) in 5th position with the same time as the winner.

As for the general classification, the climber from Boyacá, Róbinson López (GW Erco Shimano) maintained the advantage over his rivals. He is followed by Guatemalan Mardoqueo Vásquez (Hino-One-La Red-Suzuki) at 35 seconds and by David González (Team Medellín-EPM) at 3:39.

The breakaway of the day was led by Colombian Julián Cardona (Team Medellín-EPM); Mexicans Ignacio Prado (Canel’s – Java) and José Reyes (Mexico National Team) and Guatemalans Edgar Torres (Hino-One-La red-Suzuki), Elí Alejandro Sisimith (Red Hook) and Esdras Morales (Eca Electricidad).

In the closing stages, there was a vibrant battle for the victory between the escapees and the peloton, which ended with a happy ending for the fast men of the bunch, where Sebastián Brenes (Canel’s-Java) emerged victorious.

The prestigious Guatemalan race will continue this Saturday with a crucial stage, a 15-kilometer time trial in Villa Canales over mountainous terrain. The successor to local rider Gerson Toc, last year’s champion, will be announced this Sunday, November 3, in Antigua.
