Just a few weeks ago, during the Road World Championships in Zurich, Switzerland, Mauricio Vargas, President of the Colombian Cycling Federation, received for his high contributions to world cycling the UCI symbol necklace from David Lappartient, head of the International Cycling Union, while José Peláez, President of COPACI, presented him with a parchment.
Lappartient spoke to the audience accepting his “poor knowledge of the Spanish language”, but said that “In this case it is about recognizing a character and an entity that have contributed to the development of cycling, supporting talents and organizing great races”.
He then made use of a video prepared by the rector of world cycling herself, which begins with the phrase “Colombia is a recognized force in the world of cycling and one of the key people behind these successes is Jorge Mauricio Vargas Carreño, who over 45 years in the service of cycling has managed to place his country firmly in the field of cycling and together with his Federation have achieved as a product, talents of the highest competitive level”.
The video further noted that “Vargas Carreño has played various roles in the Federation and As president of the Federation since 2019 have held various national and international events UCI as the Junior World Track recently and as a member of the Colombian Olympic Committee and Copaci has been responsible for promoting all modalities of cycling”.
Finally, Vargas Carreño received a letter of thanks from the UCI signed by the Director of International Relations Rose Etoundi by virtue of “his contribution to the Seminar of the National Federations with the conference that the President of the Colombian Cycling Federation held as an activity of the World Road Championships in Zurich.
