On a happy day for the breakaway, Wout van Aert won the tenth stage of the Vuelta a España 2024. The Visma – Lease a Bike rider was the strongest of the breakaway and emerged victorious after riding 160 kilometers between Ponteareas and Baiona. Australian Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) held the lead without any setbacks.
The Belgian easily beat the Frenchman Quentin Pacher (Groupama – FDJ), who came in second at three seconds. Spain’s Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) was third in the leg-breaking stage. The best Colombian was Harold Tejada (Astana Qazaqstan) in tenth place, more than 5 minutes behind the winner.
The breakaway of the day was led by Spaniard Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates), German Juri Hollmann (Alpecin – Deceuninck), Frenchman Quentin Pacher (Groupama – FDJ) and Belgians Wout van Aert (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and William Junior Lecerf (Soudal Quick-Step).
The quintet worked together and with the passing of the kilometers increased their advantage to more than six minutes. On the third climb of the day on the Alto de Mabia (6km at 5.7%), leader Ben O’Connor’s team took control of the peloton and allowed them to make a small cutback.
In the end, the peloton slowed down again and let the breakaway take the win. Among the escapees they attacked, but no one could prevent the victory of Belgian Wout van Aert (Visma – Lease a Bike), who reached his 49th victory in his palmares.
This Wednesday will take place the 11th stage of the Iberian round, a circuit around the Cortizo Padrón Technological Campus that will have 166.5 kilometers and four categorized climbs.
