YORKSHIRE, GREAT BRITAIN. Danish cyclist Mads Pedersen gave the surprise by proclaiming himself World Champion in the test that closed the World Road Cycling World Championships in Yorkshire (United Kingdom) on Sunday, a 261-kilometer race in which the title defender retired before the end, the Spanish Alejandro Valverde.
Pedersen, 23, unexpectedly won the Italian Matteo Trentin, favorite and who launched the final sprint of a trio headboard in which the Swiss Stefan Kung, one of the heroes of a dantesque test for weather conditions, took the bronze.
That the Italian splashed water on the legs in the last kilometers already made suspect that he had some physical problem. Even so, when it started, few doubted that it was going to add the gold of the World Cup to the European that it achieved in 2018.
Before Trentin disappointed, so did another of the big favorites, the Dutchman Mathieu van del Poel, who was the one who provoked the decisive attack in the platoon 33 kilometers away but burst 12, being in the group of elected.
Without Valverde in the final stretch, the best Spaniards were the Basque brothers Gorka and Ion Izagirre, ninth and sixteenth within the main group that reached 25 seconds of the winner. That ended in 6 hours, 27 minutes and 28 seconds.
Gorka almost linked with the head quintet on the penultimate lap, but he lacked a few seconds and then he had no help.
Those last meters were the culmination of a race that already started with problems because the prevailing weather conditions, added to the water dropped in previous days, forced the route to be shortened. To which 50 km of the hardest before the entry into the final Harratage circuit was eliminated.
A circuit of 14 kilometers to which instead of the seven scheduled laps the runners had to take nine, with the final result of 261 kilometers in route instead of the planned 280. (EFE)
